South East Alresford Scheme

Scope of the SchemeThis scheme started out as a proposal to bring FTTP to Orchard Close. It  then expanded to include the surrounding streets once it was realised that there were synergies that could be exploited to reduce the cost per property. The scheme is Demand Led.

Properties covered by the scheme have some of the worse internet download speeds in the town. In the Linnets Road (South) area the download speed is below 10 Mbits/s. In the rest of the area download speeds are rarely above 30 Mbit/s, with most in the 20 - 30 Mbit/s region.

The scheme is currently limited to the following postcodes:

SO24 9LP, SO24 9ND, SO24 9NE, SO24 9NH, SO24 9NJ, SO24 9NL, SO24 9NN, SO24 9NP, SO24 9NQ, SO24 9NR, SO24 9PA, SO24 9PB, SO24 9PG, SO24 9PH, SO24 9PJ, SO24 9PL, SO24 9PQ, SO24 9PY, SO24 9XE, SO24 9XF.

The reason for the low speeds is that all the properties are served by BT Openreach Cabinet 4 at the junction of Nursery Road and Sun Lane. While most of the properties in Alresford are within a reasonable distance of their nearest cabinet, those in the south east quadrant are more than 1km distant and can never get high speed internet without a change in technology.

The good news is that there is an existing network of Openreach ducts from Cabinet 4 to most of the properties in the bounded area, and ultrafast broadband can be brought to them by using these ducts to pull fibre optic cables to be used instead of the copper ones. These result in up to gigabit download speeds.

BT Openreach have estimated that the cost to bring fibre to this community is:

  • Core community – 373 Premises
  • Initial Estimate – £387,230
  • Cost Per Premise – £1,038.15

The "Cost per Premise" assumes that everyone Pledges their Voucher. In practice, we need enough pledges to cover the cost.
